Does Whole Milk Formula Support Digestion?

Does Whole Milk Formula Support Digestion?

Let's get into the science of whole milk fat and gut health.

Does whole milk formula support digestion?

For most babies, the short answer is yesBreastmilk has lots of milk fat! And babies need 50% of their calories from fat. That’s why we include as much natural milk fat as possible in our formula.

  • Milk fat from whole cow milk is shown to support babies’ gut health1
  • Science deep dive: Milk fat provides palmitic acid in the sn-2 position. This is easier for babies to absorb and has been demonstrated to be important for the gut microbiota2
  • In vegetable oils, the majority of palmitic acid is in the sn-1 or sn-3 position, which can lead to formation of calcium soaps. Most formulas use vegetable oils as their only fat source.3
  • Whole milk fat also provides short chain fatty acids that support the growth of beneficial bacteria and help support digestion4
  • MFGM (milk fat globule membrane) is naturally occurring in breastmilk and whole cows’ milk (but not vegetable oils). Ongoing research shows that MFGM can help support infant gut health.5

How else does Nara Organics support digestion?

Beyond milk fat, Nara Organics Infant Formula is designed to be easy on tummies.

  • Our formula includes GOS, an organic prebiotic, to help support gut health and soft poops
  • Organic GOS contains 3 HMOs also found in breastmilk: 3’-GL, 4’-GL and 6’-GL
  • Nara has a 60:40 whey to casein ratio, modeled after mature breastmilk and designed to be easy on tummies

Who shouldn’t use a whole milk formula?

If your baby is diagnosed with a milk allergy, you shouldn’t feed any cow’s milk formula — whole milk or skim. Babies with a milk allergy should also avoid goat milk formula because the milk protein in goat and cow milk are similar. Always talk to your pediatrician or a healthcare professional to help you decide the appropriate formula for your baby.

“I have low breast milk supply and I was looking for a good organic whole milk formula supplement for my baby. We tried all the famous ones, even goat, and we were unsuccessful until we found Nara! My baby loves it and because of it he is now finally interested in the bottle.”

Babies will regulate how much they eat according to their needs, so this is just a guide. On average, your baby should take in about 2½ ounces of formula a day for every pound of body weight. When caring for your twins, start by choosing double the usual monthly supply. As you evaluate how each baby feeds, you can change the amount of infant formula you order based on their needs. Always talk to your pediatrician if you have questions about your baby’s specific needs.
